The electronic and electrical equipment installed in military land vehicles must be compatible with the vehicle’s on-board voltage network. Therefore, military standard MIL-STD-1275 (Characteristics of 28 volt DC electrical systems in military vehicles) is intended to ensure compatibility between the vehicle's 28 volt electrical system and consumer devices such as computers or displays. The devices must not have a negative effect on the on-board electrical system and must be able to handle fluctuations. As such, devices must not suffer functional limitations resulting from malfunctions, nor may they damage the on-board electrical system and other systems connected to it.
The various editions of the standard describe aspects such as transient voltage characteristics, the handling of voltage peaks, overvoltage, temperature ranges and ESD requirements. Electromagnetic compatibility is part of MIL-STD-1275. The regulation refers back to MIL-STD-461 for this purpose, because the on-board electrical system can also emit interference and influence IT devices in the vehicle.
